How to choose a magazine subscription you’ll actually read

A good subscription is less about finding the “best” magazine and more about choosing one that fits your attention, routine and interests.

How to choose a magazine subscription you’ll actually read

Start with the habit, not the title

Think about when you actually read: on weekends, during a commute, over coffee or in short breaks. A magazine that matches that window is more likely to get opened.

Choose a subject with staying power

Pick an interest you return to naturally. A broad title can work well for discovery, while a specialist title is usually better if you already know what you want to learn.

Match the frequency to your pace

Weekly issues can feel exciting but demanding. Monthly and quarterly titles give you more time to finish an issue before the next one arrives.

Decide whether print or digital is the better default

Print is easy to leave somewhere visible and return to. Digital is lighter, searchable and easier to carry. The right choice is the one that removes friction.

Use a short test before committing

Read a few recent issues, scan the table of contents and notice how many stories you genuinely want to finish. That is a better signal than the cover alone.
